SImilan - DAY TRIPS

The nine islands of the Similan Archipelago are located just about 1.5 hours by boat away from Phuket and reach in a straight line north to south in the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea.

The impressive granite rocks of the Similan Islands reach under the surface and offer a breath-taking view with their overgrowth of multi-colored, beautiful corals. The natural architecture of the stacked granite rocks varies with each dive spot, and often reminds of sunken cities.

The dive spots with the most beautiful rock formations are Christmas Point and Elephant Head Rock, where you can dive through little caverns and overhangs. The combination of a breath-taking underwater scenery and a visibility of up to 30 meters (90 ft) makes these dive spots a real diver's paradise.

Sharks and other large fish like rays and huge barracudas are regular visitors to the Similan Islands. They seem to prefer the reefs at the dive spots Shark Fin Reef and Deep Six. The most beautiful and varied coral formations with huge gorgonian and sponges are to be found at the picturesquely named dive spot East of Eden.

The Island Koh Bon is part of the Similan National Park.

Koh Bon is surrounded with steep slopes and is mostly overgrown with grass. You can look right though the island by way of a circular tunnel at the western tip of the island. The main reef is a drop-off, which reaches to a depth of over 40 meters (120 ft). The wall is almost completely overgrown with pastel-colored soft corals. Blue-spotted rays and leopard sharks can frequently be found in the sandy parts on the bottom.

Chances of spotting Manta Rays are excellent, especially from November through April.
